Post 12: The Barton Center for Diabetes Education, Inc.

Rolling up on some of our last blog posts here for HMP 721. This management class has taught me a lot about certain organizations, how they work, and why they do what they do. I have learned that mission statements, although sometimes overlooked, are really important to an organization.

An organization that has truly had a huge impact on my life is The Barton Center For Diabetes Education, Inc. They are an organization that focuses on advocating and education young kids with Type One Diabetes. They run a few camps, an overnight all-girls camp, Camp Barton, an overnight all-boys camp, Camp Joslin, a day camp, and a traveling adventure camp. I have been lucky enough to attend Camp Barton as a camper and as a staff. The more years I have spent there, I have realized how important their mission statement is to them. As a staff member, we often review it and make sure that we are truly fulfilling our goals and values.

The Barton Center for Diabetes Education's mission statement is:
"To improve the lives of children with insulin-dependent diabetes through education, recreation, and support programs which inspire and empower."

Although it is short and simple, the actions that this statement empowers goes much deeper. The staff takes what the mission statement says and puts it into actions. Through small teachable moments, like teaching a camper about how to treat low blood sugars while playing sports or swimming. They also instill larger lifelong lessons my making connections between camper and staff to help answer they harder questions kids may have like, how to deal with Type One Diabetes as you become a teenager and have to deal with things other kids do not. It is a great organization for families to learn about their kid's disease, but it is an even better place for kids to grown and play like a normal kid and make an extremely important connection to others.

The day to day schedule is run like a traditional summer camp, but it is the mission underneath that really makes this place amazing. We do not go over the mission statement every day when we work, but we are often reminded of what the goal is.

Before this class, I had never really seen the way a mission statement effects day-to-day activities that an organization does. By learning about missions and values it is easy to see the way this camp exemplifies these qualities and just how life-changing this place can really be.
